INTRODUCTION TO PLANT IDENTIFICATION
A hands-on LIVE HYBRID class that walks you through the different ecosystems and plant communities of Southern California.
Learn how to identify over 50 plants and 10 common plant families (both edible and poisonous), so that no matter where you live or travel in the world, you can spot your herb friends and know their safety.
Want to gain a deeper connection with the natural world?
As herbalists, we are the storytellers of the land and voices for the plants. Hear about the story of our land, our water, and the natural cycles.
Learn how to build a two-way relationship with the plants and become part of a community committed to protecting this land!

LIVE ONLINE OPTION
FEBRUARY 21 - MARCH 27, 2024
Wednesdays, 5PM-6PM PST (8-9 EST)
This is hybrid online/outdoor class, with light hiking of up to 2 to 3 miles per class. Students will have the option to attend 100% in person, OR be able to attend FULLY online.
IN PERSON CLASSES will meet at a different location each week in the Santa Barbara area. Schedule, locations and driving directions will be emailed out the week before class starts.

ONLINE CLASSES will meet for one LIVE zoom class each week. Students will also spend 2-3 hours each week of independent study watching videos of plant profiles, and a weekly hike in the wilderness to identify local plants in the field.
Not able to make the LIVE class?
Don't worry! This is a HYBRID class, meaning you can attend the IN-PERSON plant walks, OR attend our LIVE ONLINE Class Check-in and watch the Plant ID Videos on your own time.
All the online classes are RECORDED, so that if you can't check in that week, you can still watch the recording! Class recordings are made available by 5pm the next day.
You have LIFETIME ACCESS to recordings and all class material, AND the ability to chat and CONNECT with your COMMUNITY in our online class chat!

Who is this course for?
This course is designed for complete beginners who have never studied plants before, as well aspiring herbalists and holistic practitioners that have already had a fundamental overview herbal training but would like to deepen their knowledge of botany and local plants. If you have already taken botany classes but would like a survey of plants in the Southern California area and its uses, this class would be right up your alley too!
How long do I have access to the course?
How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.
What do I need?
We recommend a couple of books for reference that we recommend for the course. A book & supply list will be sent out upon registration for the course.
For distance learners, you will need a computer with streaming video and recording capability, a pair of headphone, the zoom app downloaded on your device, and your enthusiasm to show up and learn!
What if I miss the live class?
Anyone who registers for the class will be given access to the online class portal. All class recordings will be available to watch anytime. Class notes and hand outs will also be posted online, so no matter what, you won’t miss anything!
If you work during the day, and still want the live support and coaching from a teacher, don’t worry! We have an online chat so you can still ask questions and get feedback throughout the entire course.
